Dr. Erika D. Tate delivered the keynote for the Elevate Savannah Girls Conference in Savannah, Georgia. She addressed 25 middle and high school girls.
Through story, examples, and reflective questions, she encouraged girls to
- Know Yourself: When you know yourself, you listen to your voice, your heart. You become in tune with what you want to do, pursue, and learn. When you speak about what you know of yourself, you invite others on your journey – whether as resources who advise you or cheerleaders who encourage you.
- Know your Places: When you know your places, you listen for the needs and desires of your community, the history and experiences of the people in it. When you speak about what you know of your community – what’s special and what needs to change, you invite others to be in service with you as collaborators, as fellow #socialjusticewarriors.
- Know your People: When you know your people, you listen to their stories, their hearts. You create space for their voices. When you speak with them about their becoming, their pathways of learning and serving, you build community.
Dr. Tate’s message was an inspiring reminder that with a practice of reflection, you will continue to learn to know yourself, your places, and your people. And what you do not know, you will know from learning.
